i took candy from a stranger…or so i thought
a few weekends ago i was in seattle with my sister. she had some work to do and i had some hanging out to get done. we stayed right downtown in a nice hotel walking distance from all the tourist attractions. i always visit the pike street market (mainly for the cheese curds at Beecher’s cheese factory) and this trip specifically i wanted to swing by the mariners team store to pick up a few new things for my up coming spring training trip.
we had a free afternoon so the 2 of us decided to walk the town. from our hotel we passed a mall, to starbucks for an iced coffee, thru a few novelty shops all the way to safeco field. the one way trip was about 2 miles. we decided to wait until the return trip to visit pike market knowing we would both buy things that we didnt want to carry all over town. i got a new mariners hat, a griffey shirt, and a few decals then headed out. at pike’s we watched the fish guys toss the fish, bought a few pieces of fresh fruit, and a bucket of cheese curds to power our bodies up the hill back to our hotel.
about 1/2 way up the hill we saw nordstrom rack. my sister wanted to check out the boot selection so we ducked inside. we walked to the back of the store hopped in the elevator and this is where my story becomes entertaining.
…this has never happen to me before and i dont think it will ever happen again…
we entered the elevator as a couple already inside looked at us and gave us the “we are all jammed in a small space together -awkwardness” smile. i reached over and pushed the button to the boot floor then as the doors closed all 4 of us stood quietly. about 1/2 way up to our floor the lady reached into a small white bag much like a bag given to you when you buy cookies at subway or mrs fields and pulled out a small piece of food. she reached up above the guys mouth (like a mama bird), as he tilted his head back and opened his mouth (like a baby bird) then she dropped the snack in.
sometimes i have these moments where i think of something funny and that little thing inside my head that is suppose to say “funny thought but not a good idea to actually do” doesn’t activate.
immediately after she dropped the treat in his mouth i stepped towards him side by side tilted my head back and opened my mouth. (just like on animal planet i was the 2nd bird that didnt get food that was now begging.) without hesitation she reached in her bag and pulled out a piece for me and dropped it down the hatch. it all happened so fast i was caught off guard! the fact that she didnt hesitate and just went right along with it made it perfect. i sort of chuckled and looked at my sister who was in awe. i looked back at the lady as my laughter grew louder. the guy just stood there with a look of ‘why is my wife feeding some random guy?’ the doors opened we were at our floor so we stepped out. as soon as the doors closed i turned to my sister and busted up laughing. i said “can you believe she did that? that was perfect!” she was laughing too. because i was so caught in the moment it took me a few extra seconds to realize she hadn’t given me a piece of a cookie. as i chewed more the taste got worse and worse. what did she feed me? it started to come to me, she was middle eastern and as i choked it down i came to the conclusion it was some sort of fried middle eastern food. im pretty sure it wasnt meat, i dont think it was a veggie and it definitely was NOT a sweet. we walked around and looked at shoes for about 10min. i just kept swallowing trying to get rid of that taste. i couldnt take it anymore so i went up to the next stranger i saw and asked for gum. they grabbed a pack out of their purse grabbed a piece from the pack but…….this time i did not tilt my head back……
